Our Christmas lights are on…

It’s a miracle on Temple Street as our Christmas lights are switched on with the help of one of our brave patients!
Temple st Chrsitmas 05The festive season kicked off in Temple Street tonight, when brave Izzy O’Connell from Cork, switched on our Christmas lights with the help of Santa. Izzy, age 6, spent three months in Temple Street this year following the removal of a brain tumour. It is hoped that the lights will keep the magic alive in the hospital and offer hope to the children who sadly won’t get to go home this Christmas.

Last year, almost 400 children were cared for in Temple Street on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Denise Fitzgerald, Chief Executive of Fundraising explains:

“This Christmas our nurses & doctors will be busy caring for the babies and children who are too ill or weak to make it home and we want to help bring the magic of Christmas to Temple Street. ”

Temple st Chrsitmas 04Izzy O’Connell, who did the honours of switching on the lights, was rushed to Temple Street on the 10th February this year for lifesaving surgery. Following an 11 hour operation to remove a brain tumour, Izzy spent 9 weeks in hospital while she learnt to walk again. Speaking at the switch-on Izzy said:

“I love Temple Street and I don’t mind coming to the hospital for my check-ups because I love getting to see everyone! It was so much fun switching on the lights with Santa. The hospital looks really pretty, and I think all the children in Temple Street this Christmas will really like it. The lights will make them really happy”

Earlier in the day, Tesco Ireland unveiled a magical Christmas wonderland within the hospital to surprise and delight our little patients who will be spending Christmas away from home this year. On the eve of the big switch-on, Tesco colleagues turned the ground floor of Temple Street into an Elf Yourself Workshop, a Magical Christmas Fair and a Magical Movie Theatre. Run by Tesco Elves, the children and their parents were today invited to make Christmas decorations, meet the elves and post their letters to Santa, taste some delicious Christmas fare and watch a festive film, creating an unforgettable Christmas experience. Thanks Tesco!
