Cartoon Saloon creates new film for Temple St.

Watch our new short film, ‘Ben and Tara’s visit to the hospital’, narrated by Chris O’Dowd and kindly created by award-winning Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon.

The film, which is the only resource of its kind in Ireland, takes Temple Street mascots Ben and Tara on a fun guided tour inside the beloved children’s hospital as they prepare to have an operation. It will be used to help prepare younger children coming to the hospital for surgery and to explain in simple, understandable terms what is involved in every stage of the process.

Cartoon Saloon, the company behind Oscar-nominated films ‘The Secret of Kells’ and ‘Song of the Sea’, as tarawell as TV series ‘Puffin Rock’, have kindly donated their time and expertise over the past year to develop the film for Temple Street.

‘Ben & Tara’s visit to the hospital’ will be screened at Temple Street’s ‘Pre-Admission Club’; held every month to give children undergoing surgery a basic understanding of the hospital and what to expect. Ben and Tara – the hospital’s mascot dolls – are also used at the sessions as a visual aid to demonstrate hospital equipment such as stethoscopes, blood pressure machines and thermometers. The video will also be available online for children all over the country to watch.

BenSenior Play Specialist in Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Caroline Flynn says, “We’re hugely grateful to the team at Cartoon Saloon for taking the time out of their hectic schedules to develop this wonderful video resource for Temple Street. It is a fantastic tool for children to demystify the whole process of having an operation and help allay their fears before coming to hospital. By explaining the process in clear and understandable terms to children, it not only greatly reduces their anxiety in advance of the operation but also improves co-operation during procedures.”

She adds, “We’d also like to warmly thank Chris O’Dowd for narrating the film. We were absolutely thrilled that he lent his voice to the project!”
