Healthy Wholegrain Soda Bread

Healthy Wholegrain Soda Bread


  • 225g plain flour
  • 225g wholemeal flour
  • 1 pint buttermilk
  • 1 medium egg
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 heaped tsp bread soda
  • 2 tbsp demerara sugar
  • Pinch salt


  • 3 tbsp poppy seeds
  • Handful of sunflower / pumpkin / sesame seeds to top


  1. Preheat oven to 180ºC
  2. Sift the plain flour and mix with the plain flour, demerara sugar, salt & bread soda (and poppy seeds if you wish)
  3. Whisk together the buttermilk, egg and olive oil
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients thoroughly
  5. Grease and flour a 2lb loaf tin (essential or the bread may stick!)
  6. Pour in the mixture – note that this mix is very wet
  7. Top with seeds or oats if desired
  8. Bake for 45 – 50 min at 180ºC
  9. Carefully release from tin and allow to cool before slicing
  10. Enjoy with smoked salmon and cream cheese, toasted with butter and jam…whatever you fancy!
